Western travelers to East Asia will sometimes see monks in sunglasses or using technology like smartphones or Air Pods. This becomes of interest because it runs contrary to their own expectations of what “being a monk” is really all about. It’s “surprising” or “funny.” But perhaps “refreshing” is the better word for someone who is so certain of themselves, so clear and authentic in the way they live their lives or practice their spirituality, that there is nothing self-conscious or performative about it. There is nothing to prove or demonstrate because they already know who they are. What they use or carry has nothing to do with it. They step out into the world and... simply are who they are. “Like a fish in water” says the calligraphy on this piece.
