What at first may seem an irrational adhesion to optimism, this Zen proverb is over 1,000 years old and is best grasped intuitively.  If we accept that life doesn’t happen to us, but for us, then we begin to understand that every annoyance teaches patience; every abandonment or betrayal teaches self-reliance; anything that angers you teaches forgiveness and compassion; anything you fear teaches courage; any abuse of power teaches you to take your power back.  This painting encourages mindfulness and a state of “no resistance.”  In the present moment, when mind and ego and judgment fall away, you too will realize… inner peace is always possible.
